THREE IN TWO FOR SCOTT & TWO IN A ROW FOR ZEBRAS - BUT ONLY JUST.

A late try from Rob Scott saw Workington register their second win in a row with a hard-earned 12 - 7 victory against Creighton in a gritty encounter at The Ellis.

To say that the first half was like a game of chess would be an understatement, as right from the kick off, both sides delivered an impressive advert for defensive rugby with neither side managing to breach each other's iron clad defensive rearguard; indeed, certain teams at the Rugby World Cup would have learned a few lessons about defending.

However, any thoughts of a rare "nil-nil" were extinguished three minutes before half time as Rhys Burr eventually managed to pick Creighton's lock and dart over for a fine try that was effortlessly converted by Rob Scott.

The second half began with both sides again containing each other with well marshalled defending, but gradually chances were created and it was Creighton who seized the opportunity to score on the hour as Joe O'Donnell's clever kick and chase left the Zebras breathless, but with the tryline at his mercy he was brutally taken out by uncompromising Zebras play, which did not impress the referee one jot as he awarded a penalty try.

With the score now level ar 7 points apiece, the match suddenly stepped up a gear as the next try scored was now more likely to be the winner for either side and the intensity was so high, one could have scooped the Ellis Sports Ground atmosphere with a spoon.

It was only time before the pressure would cause one team to snap and with five minutes remaining it was Creighton who were caught asleep after a clever kick from Burr found Scott, who proceeded to ruthlessly exploit the tiring defence and storm home for an unconverted try.

The final whistle brought loud cheers from the Ellis faithful and roars of joy on the pitch as Workington made it two wins in a row for the first time since February 2020.

Once again, the mix of new faces and senior heads delivered a palatable performance - especially from Burr and Scott, who are quickly forging a dynamic centre partnerships, with Scott now claiming 3 tries in 2 games. Meanwhile, captain Scott Campbell led by impeccable example - clearly the captaincy has added a new dimension to his play and his calming influence - especially to the new boys - during an intensive afternoon was effective. It was also nice for the Ellis crowd to witness the return of Zebras Legends Neil Hastings and Mark Murphy in cameo appearances off the bench.

Creighton were another team that had defeated Workington home and away last season, so revenge tasted extra sweet for The Zebras who now aim for the hat-trick next Saturday when they travel to St Benedict's.
