At the third attempt, Workington Zebras finally registered their first victory of 2024 as they overcame a stubborn and determined Aspatria Eagles 22 - 0 at The Ellis in Cumbria Counties 1.
Not only was this their fourth win of the season, but it was also the first time in exactly two years that they had "nilled" their opposition.
Workington found fluid rhythm and cohesive efficiency in their attacks and were rewarded with tries from Rhys Burr, James Taylor - his maiden try for the club - David Todhunter and Rob Scott with his 10th of the season , with David Todhunter supplying the conversion.
The Zebras could have added more tries, but Aspatria Eagles were in no mood to fold and with resolute defending allied to fine tackling managed to restrict their opponents for long periods of the match.
Indeed, they had a few chances themselves to break their scoring duck, but were denied by careless knock--ons and The Zebras' well marshalled and ever-alert defensive backline.
Workington move up to 9th in the table and the victory will give them enhanced confidence and belief going into this week's fixture as they encounter league leaders Carlisle at Warwick Road.
