BIG LOSS HARD TO SWALLOW FOR ZEBRAS AS KENDAL GORGE ON TRY FEAST

Workington 0 Kendal 99

History was made at The Ellis by Workington - but it was an occasion that they would much prefer to forget as they registered their biggest ever defeat in all competitions with a 99 - 0 thrashing by Kendal in the first round of the Cumbria Cup.

With three divisions between the clubs, it was always going to be a tough ask for the Zebras to produce a giantkilling act, especially as they were missing several key players through injury whilst Kendal fielded their strongest possible team in their quest to win the cup for the first time since 2008.

Barely two minutes had elapsed when the Mint Bridge men opened the floodgates when Dini Noyo finished off a well drilled move to go over the whitewash.

On ten minutes the lead was increased when Glenn Chesher produced a lightning break to leave Workington floundering as he sprinted clear to touch down and things got worse for the Zebras two minutes later when their defence was punctured by more clever play that ended with Will Montgomery taking his turn for a try.

Try as they could Workington just could not keep up and on 16 minutes they were once again cut to shreds as Kris Bratton thundered through to cruise home for Kendal's 4th try, all but one converted by Glen Weightman.

Finally the Zebras managed to get back into the game and began to make several deep surges into Kendal territory, with Jonny Howarth, David Todhunter, Rob Scott, Grant Reid and Kieran Ritchie all producing nifty footwork and clever passages of play.

However, they were continously thwarted by the visitors' rock solid defensive wall and having rode the storm, Kendal punished them with another try on the half hour when from a quick pass from the scrum found Montgomery who darted in for his 2nd try of the afternoon and Weightman again converted.

Despite the mounting deficit, Workington kept their heads up and again produced a short spell of attacking play but once more the Kendal rearguard were ever alert to extinguish any threat of a consolation score.

Three minutes from time, Nono snaffled the ball from a crossfield kick and slalomed his way through for his 2nd try, again converted by Weightman, and then with the last action of the first half, Nathan Wooff wasted no time in powering away to touch down unopposed.

Any hopes that Kendal would ease up in the second half were destroyed with 2 tries in the opening 5 minutes - first through a solo run by Weightman, then Robbie Collinson squirted into the corner, having shaken off a last gasp challenge. Both tries were converted by Chris Park, who had now taking over kicking duties from Weightman.

By this time, Workington heads had dropped as time and again they were constantly pushed deep into their own half as Kendal made surge after surge, eager to keep the score ticking along and they did just that with six more tries.

Wooff produced his 2nd score and he was followed in swift succession by Ben Dixon, Zebras old boy Mike Fearon, Jacob Sutton and then Montgomery completed his hat trick before Bratton added his 2nd try to round off the feast. Park converted all but the last try.

This was Workington's 4th successive defeat in all competitions and they will need to get back on the winning trail as quickly as possible, starting with the visit of Whitehaven in the Cumbria League Cup.
