Steelers narrow win maintains a 2-0 record in new Cumbria shield campaign

Not sure the last time a Workington side played at Moresby, however it is good to see them back competing and am sure that everyone with a interest in Cumbria Rugby Union wish them well. That said some things dont change much, and conditions proved heavy to say the least. A well contested game throughout the Steelers probably deserved the vicotory based on their organisation and cohesion particularly in the forwards. The front row of Eric Stamper, Chris Stringer and Tom Doran proved a thorn in the side for the Moresby scrum and laid the foundation for the Steelers forwards. However despite having more of the posession, Moresby defended keenly and the Steelers had to rely on the boot of John McCrickerd to seal victory with two penalty attmpts one in each half. Moresby scored their points just on the stroke of half time when the Steelers attempted to play out of their own 22 and when a stray pass was collected by the Moresby 10 it was worked to the wing to score in the corner. Under the circumstances this was a good win for the Steelers, who were badly affected by call ups to the 1st xv and as a result contained 6 under 18 players in the side. Moresby also had a young side which bodes well for them also.

Next week the Steelers entertain St Benedicts and will be hoping to secure another victory in the short league format, however having played their opponents already this season it is sure to be a close affair once again.
