Steelers not helped by injuries and return of experienced Wigton players

Steelers set off slowly making several simple mistakes very early on,
Within 5 minutes of play and from a steelers knockon Wigton seized upon
this and scored an unconverted try.
From the restart Steelers applied lots of pressure and were encamped within the Wigton 22 for several minutes and Chris Stringer was very unlucky to be hauled down within a metre of the try line, where by the ball was kicked down field toward the halfway line.
The ball was fed to T(twig)Lawson who evaded two tackles before picking up the pace to race past the fullback and score an unconverted try. The game ebbed and flowed from both ends for 20 minutes, Steelers had a scrum on their own 22 and made a simple mistake trying to move the ball at the base of the scrum and Wigton scrumhalf punted the ball through for the winger to pickup and romp in under the sticks with Paul Branthwaite adding the conversion.

The Steelers again applied a lot of pressure within Wigton's 10 metre area,Wigton knocked the ball forward and from the resulting scrum Lee Wordsworth pickedup and went blind side drew the No8 and popped the ball to John McCrickerd who rounded the fullback to score near the corner, Johnny Howarth stepped up and kicked a very good conversion from the right hand side touchline right on half time. HT score 12 - 12.

The game then moved from end to end with good rugby from both sides,
However when the steelers were moving out of their area the backs went to ground with the ball waiting for one or two forwards to get in support, the referee told Lee the scrum half to use the ball or lose it Lee passed the ball only for the ball to be spilled and an alert Wigton stand off picked up the ball and sent it wide where the winger went in at the corner.

The Steelers tried very hard toget back into the game only to be frustrated by some poor refereing decisions and so ended up being on the wrong end of a 17 - 12 defeat, which was not a bad result as Wigton had fielded several players who had first and county team experience.
