With the Ellis main pitch suffering from the inclement weather, the Steelers played their League game against Cockermouth on the paddock

However this change of playing surface did not change the fortunes of the Steelers, as they proceeded to give victory to the visitors. In the first half the Steelers played the more controlled rugby with good continuity between forwards and backs, however poor decision making in vital areas cost the Steelers. Dominating the scrums with good work from Curt Campbell and the ever green veteran Barry Hunton the Steelers led 6-3 at half time following two successful penalties from the boot of the enigmatic Johnny Howarth. Although struggling in the lineout’s the Steelers forwards played better as a unit securing good possession for the backs, however some poor kicking allowed Cockermouth off the hook.

In the second half the Steelers forwards continued to take the game to their opponents and following some strong running by David Wordsworth and Chris Colley the Steelers laid siege to the Cockermouth try line. From a succession of 5 meter scrums Jamie Dunn proved unstoppable as he barged his way over for his first try of the season. At 11-3 to the good the Steelers were in control however with 15mins to go they incredibly allowed Cockermouth to steal the game. Following a kick and chase Lee wordsworth impeded the attacking winger and the referee awarded a penalty try to make the score 11-10. Soon afterwards the Steelers conceded a unnecessary penalty for being offside at a ruck. The penalty was converted and Cockermouth led 13-10. Following quick turnover ball the ball was moved to Mark Hunton who chipped ahead, however he knocked the ball on while trying to gather with the try line at his mercy. With the clock running down Cockermouth sealed victory when their scrum half out paced the home defense from a scrum and waltzed under the posts for a converted try final score Steelers 11 Cockermouth 20
