The wind wasn't the only strong force on the paddock!

Workington Steelers were host to Keswick 2nds on what started off as a lovely day but soon started to turn with a strong wind bringing rain to the paddock.

The Steelers started off with some bad luck as young fullback Glen Atherton was brought to the ground by a nasty looking spear tackle. The referee seemed to miss the severity of the horrible tackle and awarded a penalty for what should have been at least a yellow card.

Keswick then ran in a try to add to their earlier achievement of a penalty kick to make the score 10-0 to Keswick 2nds.

The Steelers fought back against the increasing wind as well as the opposition and from a well executed maul, Nicky Carter drove over the line to make the score 10-5.

Unfortunately Keswick didn’t take long until they attacked again scoring in the corner.

This latest try from the Keswick 2nds made the half time score 15-5 to Keswick.

The crowd was reinforced from the Workington Zebras fixture being called off and the addition of voices shouting encouragement from the sideline. This vocal support with the added force of the wind seemed to propel the Steelers forward and up the field.

The Steelers continued this aggressive attacking force until it came to a thrilling end as captain Thomas Lawson ran through the defence to score.

The Steelers were on a roll playing well, and even when the set piece didn’t go to plan corrected it without fuss.

In the first half the Steelers were taking the ball into contact alone and invariably as a result lost possession, however this seemed to be corrected in the second half and the good support led to Andrew Burns being able to score for the Steelers to now put them ahead 17-15.

The Steelers were now on a high, all they had to do was keep up the attack and defence and they had the game in the bag.

Unfortunately Ross Cape was sent to the bin with just over 10 minutes to go, but this didn’t faze the Steelers as they kept up the pace and quality of play.

It was looking like the Steelers would take the win until Keswick’s rapid fullback broke away up the wing to score – despite the best chasing efforts of Marc Worsley’s hamstrings.
