Playing against a strong wind in the first half the Steelers started the better and their forwards in particular took the game to Wigton, with strong close quarter drives. This forward dominance set the tone for the game as the Steelers dominated posession throughout. On 10mins Chris Stringer crashed his way over for an unconverted try following sustaianed prssure on the visitors line. However Wigton hit back and made several attacks, when their hosts seemed to relax following their try. On 20 mins Wigton crossed the whitewash when some poor concentration in defense by the Steelers allowed Wigton to spread the ball and score in the corner. Dispite having much of the play it was Wigton who scored next again following some poor defense and at half time Wigton led 12-5
The second half started as the first with the home side taking advantage of the prevailing wind and laying seige to the Wanderers line. With the Steelers forwards of Dunn, Murphy, Oakes and Gullen barging at the line, Chris Boyd eventually crossed following a driving maul. With the conversion missed the visitors led 12-10 Right from the re start the home side applied more pressure and when Wigton were penalised for killing the ball, a penalty by John McCrickerd put the Steelers back in the lead 13-12. However on 70 mins and with Wigton with their backs to the wall they managed to work the blind side and put their winger away to race for a touch down in the corner to make it 13-17. With time running out the Steelers continued to batter the Wigton line and after conceding a penalty the defense succummed when a quick tap was taken and Jordan Stainton was drove over the line to seal victory for Workington 20-17.
