A Martin Grealish hat trick helped Egremont maintain second place in the Cumbria League as they convincingly defeated Workington Steelers 25 – 0 at a muddy Ellis Sports Ground.

The visitors scored 5 tries in all, claiming a bonus and they even afforded the luxury of missing each conversion.

Neither side had played for 3 weeks and the home side seemed to show it from the kick off as they struggled to cope with a lively Egremont side who opened the scoring on 5 minutes when Grealish stormed over the line. Ten minutes later, the lead was doubled when good scrummaging culminated with John Musgrave stumbling in with the last touch.

Egremont could have scored at least twice more, but some resolute defence from the home side put paid to that. However, Steelers could not capitalise and for most of the first half, never looked like scoring.

Whatever was said at half time clearly got the Steelers fired up for the second half and within the opening ten minutes had a chance to halve the deficit. But the formidable Egremont defence threw everything to protect their tryline.

That missed chance seemed to finish off the Steelers and several heads went down, though there were a few who refused to give up, namely Scott Campbell, Matt Murphy and Jordan Stainton.

Egrenont swiftly regained control and on 65 minutes, Grealish coasted through for his second try and then 5 minutes laster, Richard Postlethwaite brushed off slack marking to charge in the corner for the visitor's 4th try and a bonus point.

With Steelers tiring rapidly, Egremont relaxed slightly and had the final word on the stroke of full time when Grealish broke free to crash down for a well deserved hat trick.
