On a warm and breezy day at the Ellis the Steelers entertained Cockermouth in the Cumbria League

With excellent rugby playing conditions, the Steelers took the initiative from the kick off and following some good continuity and pressure Sam Carter converted a penalty on the 10 min mark following an indiscretion at the ruck from the visitors. Workington continued to have the upper hand and threatened the visitors line with some good passages of play. However against the run of play Cockermouth managed a touch down following a line out close out. Despite the set back the Steelers continued to dominate proceedings and when a penalty attempt was mis fielded by the visitors Mark Atkinson pounced to touch the ball down. A further penalty apiece made it 11-8 to the home side with 5 mins on the clock. Playing into the breeze the Steelers pushed for a furth score and were rewarded for their efforts when Stephen Dawes broke through the cockermouth defense and crashed over in the corner to make it 13-8 at the interval. The second stanza proved to be as tighjt as the first, however rejuvinated by their pep talk at half time it was Cockermouth who made most of the running in the second half. With Workington loosing posession in the lines and scrums defense was the order of the day. On 52 mins Cockermouth cut the deficit to 2 points when the Steelers conceided a penalty for offside. Despite being under pressure the Steelers manged to force a penalty themselves on the hour mark and Stephen Dawes increased the lead again to 16-11. Having most of the posession the visitors continued to press the home line and in the 70th ninute the Steel buckled and Cockermouth tied the game with try from a driving maul. However on 75 mins the Steelers remained on track when on a rare forage into the Cockermouth half the visitors gave away a penalty for offside and Stephen Dawes duly obliged with the boot. Cockermouth through the kitchen sink at the Steelers in the final minutes, however they were unable to add to their tally and the Steelers scraped a narrow victory 19-16
