Seven weeks after they signed off 2023 on a winning note, Workington Zebra Finches began the new year with the familiar melody of success as they maintained their promotion push with a hard-earned 29-12 triumph at Penrith Panthers.
The result may imply that it was a formality, but the first half was evenly balanced, with Workington getting a stern examination by their hosts and only in the second half did they manage to break the shackles and be more creative.
Megan Donald and Nicole Stewart each scored two tries, while Stewart added three conversions and a penalty to not only give her a personal haul of 19 points but with her efficient
alertness, relentless driving and consistent attacking, she was named Player Of The Match.
Sophie Bowness also produced a sparkling display as she delivered unflinching concentration - from defending rucks to turning balls as well as contributing to several dangerous advances into Penrith territory.
Workington remain second in League 2 North, four points behind unbeaten leaders Keswick Falcons - and both sides meet at The Ellis next Sunday in what will surely be a tough, pulsating and keenly fought encounter.
