Finches Improving

Improvement shown in the first game of March

Another defeat - but Finches produce season's best display. WORKINGTON 12 ECCLES 27 The quest for that elusive first league victory continues for Workington Finches - but they delivered their best performance of the season, despite going down 12 - 27 to Eccles at The Ellis. For the opening 20 minutes, it was pretty much honours even as both sides cancelled out each other with scoring chances at a premium, but it was Eccles who eventually broke the deadlock by scoring three unconverted tries within the space of 10 minutes At 15 - 0 down, there were concerns that Finches' heads would drop, but they took the game to the visitors with Amy Brennan, Claire Pooley and Leonie Haile more often than not in the thick of the action and new girl Helen Kinrade announcing her arrival with several menacing surges. Finally, after a lenghty spell of domination in Eccles territory, Workington were rewarded just before half time with their first try in the league since last November when Charlotte Hodgson found space and stormed through and under the posts for a try, which Kirby Neesham converted. Within a minute of the restart, Workington reduced the deficit after Marie Shearman received the ball from just inside halfway and suddenly produced a burst of pace as she kept her nerve to break clear and shrug off a late challenge to go over for a well deserved try that went unconverted. Clearly stung by having their lead slashed to 3 points and they soon reasserted their control of the game as they swept deep in their opponents' half and only the gutsy tackling of Neesham stood between them and increasing their lead. But Workington's resistance cracked on 58 minutes when Eccles scored a converted try and despite more good play from Brennan, Neesham and Kinrade (among others), the Finches just could not find a way through to get back into the match and 6 minutes from time, the ladies from Manchester wrapped up the win with an unconverted try.
