WORKINGTON 75 BURY 0

On an emotional afternoon, Workington Finches got back into the victory groove in resounding style as they ran in 13 tries to demolish Bury 75 - 0 at The Ellis.

The match was dedicated in memory of former Finches player Nicola Wilson and before kick off there was an impeccably observed minute's silence with both sides wearing rainbow armbands.

It only took the Finches two minutes to open their account when captain Charlotte Bowman broke clear before finding Marie Shearman, who after being held up just before the tryline set up Claire Pooley and she wasted no time in touching down for an unconverted try.

Pooley turned provider on ten minutes as she offloaded to Bowman, who finished off proceedings in the corner to double the lead and seven minutes later she delivered a searing run down the flank to register her second try.

On 20 minutes, the lead was increased when Fiona McKay marked her return to Finches duty by setting up Susannah Hanratty who nipped in to score her maiden try.

By this time, Bury could not find any answer to the onslaught and six minutes later Workington scored their fifth try after a successful line out saw Bowman take the killer pass and throw herself over the whitewash to complete a well deserved hat trick.

It was well and truly one way traffic as on the half hour mark, Amy Brennan produced a scorching turn of pace before finding Lauren Coulson who cut through the tired Bury defence to score under the posts.

Having been unlucky with her previous conversion attempts, Nicole Stewart made no mistake this time round and this clearly boosted her confidence as two minutes later she delivered her established signature solo run to leave her opponents flailing before touching down and while this went unconverted, she made amends for this on the stroke of half time after shrugging off unwanted attention to score her second try.

The second half was barely a minute old when Bowman's quick thinking led to Hannah Thornbery caught the Bury defence off guard to cruise home and on 48 minutes, the half century was reached as another storming run from Stewart ended with Nikita Wilson receiving her pass to score another well crafted try, which Stewart effortlessly converted.

Whilst other teams would have meekly surrendered, Bury managed to stem the tide and for nearly 20 minutes they were able to frustrate their hosts with efficient defending and occasionally making inroads into Finches' territory.

But Workington were not to be denied one last flourish and on 68 minutes a perfect high punt was launched by Stewart and Brennan came in like a wrecking ball to collect and storm home for a well taken try.

Ten minutes from time, Stewart once again turned provider to set Danielle Easdon on her way to go under the posts and after converting that try, Stewart had the final word two minutes later with another dazzling sprint to complete her own hat trick and 5th conversion to give a final total of 25 points.

Workington move up to third in North 2 West, only a point behind joint leaders Littleborough and Winnington Park and will travel to Ormskirk this Sunday.
